A tail as old as time. It’s been that way furever. (Animal puns are over). First, we had Grumpy Cat, then came Doug the Pug, and now, everyone and their mother has an IG dedicated to their pet. Even I have a cat video with over 2.4 million views.
2024 was no different. Last year was all about a slippery pygmy hippo.

If you don’t know Moo Deng, you’ve probably seen her in the middle of a doom scroll. The first time I was graced with her presence was on SportsCenter’s Instagram of all places. It didn’t take long until she followed the path of every internet celebrity with her own merch line. This year, however, I noticed a new face emerging, one with a similar attitude and incredible backstory.

Her name is Xing Xing, or Star, the 23 year old, one-armed Tibetan Macaque that lives in Ningbo, China. For the past 15 years, she’s been keeping a buddhist monk and his 83 year old wife company.
The story goes that that Grandma Ye found Xing Xing injured in a tree. Once she noticed that Xing Xing’s left arm was missing, likely from a bear trap, Ye took her in and mended her back to health. 15 years later and they’re still inseperable.

Xing Xing now takes to sitting in her outdoor sink, eating whatever Grandma Ye is preparing that day, and gazing over the Daliang Mountains. Tourists hike up the mountain in waves to meet the new internet sensation. Just like her predecessor, Xing Xing tends to bite when startled…but she settles down with a lollipop and head scratches (like most of us).

Xing Xing and Ye is a story we all can relate to. Many of us have, or had, an animal friend that changes the course of our life and made us better people for it. Some companions we go looking for. Others find us.
